Hello and welcome to Yekare History, where we uncover the stories, secrets, and facts that shape our world.
Today, we’re looking at one of the most mysterious nations on Earth — North Korea.
Here are 10 Hidden Facts About North Korea that will leave you speechless.
10. North Korea Has Its Own Internet
Most citizens can’t access the global internet. Instead, they use a closed system called “Kwangmyong”, which only connects to state-approved websites.
9. Time Works Differently There
Until recently, North Korea used its own time zone called “Pyongyang Time”, set 30 minutes behind South Korea — just to be different.
8. The Capital City Is Off-Limits to Most Citizens
Only the political elite are allowed to live in Pyongyang. Ordinary citizens can’t move there without government permission.
7. The Country Has No Traffic Lights (Almost)
In Pyongyang, traffic is often controlled by female traffic officers, known for their precise and robotic movements — a symbol of discipline and order.
6. Elections Exist — But There’s Only One Candidate
North Korea holds regular elections, but each ballot contains only one name — the approved candidate from the ruling party.
5. The Government Decides Your Job and Home
From birth, citizens are assigned their jobs and even where they live, based on their family’s loyalty to the regime.
4. Possessing a Bible Can Get You Executed
Religious freedom doesn’t exist in North Korea. Christianity is seen as a threat, and those caught with a Bible face severe punishment — even death.
3. There’s a Fake City on the Border
On the border with South Korea lies Kijong-dong, also called the “Peace Village.” It’s actually a propaganda city — empty buildings with lights that turn on and off to fool outsiders.
2. There’s Only One Hairstyle for Loyalty
Kim Jong Un’s haircut is considered a patriotic style. Men are reportedly encouraged to copy it as a sign of respect to the leader.
1. The Leader Has His Own Calendar
North Korea doesn’t use the Gregorian calendar. Their calendar starts in 1912 — the birth year of Kim Il Sung, the country’s founder. So, while it’s 2025 for us, it’s Juche 114 in North Korea.
North Korea remains one of the world’s most secretive societies — a nation frozen in time, where loyalty is mandatory and curiosity is dangerous.
